Ashwood Red #1: Dark of Night

Please, take my hand, as we jump feet first into the world of Jex Lane.

Please allow me to take a step Let me back up, I found Jex Lane and her Beautiful Monsters series in October 2017. It was October and my world was torn upside down. I was getting on a plane to visit my father who recently decided to tell me had a cancerous tumor removed. I knew that during the flight and in brief moments to myself I would need to be transported away. I actually downloaded Jex Lane by accident not typically reading m/m paranormal. However, her blurb sounded like something I would like and so I continued and fell in love, have had my heart ripped out, stomped on, and put back oh so delicately.

However, let me move forward to the first book of her new spin-off series, Ashwood Red. The first book in the series is called Dark of Night. The book needs no time to draw you into the story, from the very first page the plot has been laid. Unfortunately not laid in a good way…if you catch my drift 😉 Without giving too much away, this story is about a girl who has everything torn from her but still manages to stand strong on her two feet. A strong female protagonist? Count me in!

What I did like in the story was the characters. Kat, one of the main protagonists, was definitely not like the female characters that are currently being written. She’s fierce, strong, says what she feels, and takes control. I was rooting for her immediately. Darrius, however, was not. I liked the role reversal. The good natured stumbling because he was totally out of his element.
I also love the fact that the minor characters in this book weren’t considered throwaways and were given personality and just enough depth to not overshadow the major players.

Also if you’re already a fellow Beautiful Monsters reader, just know that there are surprises in there for you as well.

Now what I didn’t like….it was too short and that was quite disappointing. The story was so well developed that I feel like it could have gone on for another 250 pages. However, I understood the timeline of the story and why it didn’t really need to be longer.

Now, my favorite character is Lock. There’s just something about the cowboy that I need to know more of. Pick up the book and her other series Beautiful Monsters you will not be disappointed.

End of Day (Jack & Jill Series) – Jewel E. Ann

I went into this book quite hesitantly. Though it was given to me for review, I pushed it off for as long as I possibly could because some of the books that I’ve read recently have been quite lackluster.

It’s going to be a very vague review because I can’t tell you too much without giving away the story and you wouldn’t want me to ruin a completely good story…..right?!?

Once I read the entire series, I’ll post my entire review with a spoiler alert.

Well I was wrong. The Days (Jessica & Jude) are two siblings…fraternal twins who have to fake their death because their father was a government agent who was killed and so was their mom. See why I wasn’t excited about reading the book?

But it’s so much more than that. She writes the book well. It’s a book full of flashbacks and they are done at the correct time and they help to fully flesh out the characters and explain their present actions. I’ve automatically fallen in love with Jessica. How could you not? She’s feisty, sassy, smart, and can defend herself.

She’s a true heroine. Not a damsel in distress that needs a millionaire CEO to rescue her from the pitfalls of life. Jessica can break your nose and isn’t afraid to do it. She’s my type of girl.

The first book of the Jack & Jill series does focus heavily on Jessica with Jude playing a supporting character. However, I’m sure that as the series progresses you’ll be able to get into Jude’s head as well. I certainly hope so.

The story takes time to flesh out and get deep into the Day’s story but sit back and enjoy the ride because you’re going to enjoy the pitter patter of the roller coaster going up before it crashes you down into this impressive tale.

I want to tell you it’s a love story but I can’t because it’s so much more. It’s a story about two siblings finding themselves and dealing with whatever comes their way. Maybe I love it because on some base level I can relate (and the two main male characters are quite amazing in my book).

If you’re looking for a well written, nicely developed story that has good plot lines and interesting characters, then this is the series for you.

I will continue reading the series and post my thoughts here regardless of whether I get them for review or not.

Cuffs – Georgie Tyler (Momentum Books)

Cuffs starts off with a bang. You, the reader, are instantly dropped into Lacey’s life. Running late for work, Lacey takes a shortcut, which will forever change her life.

Georgie Tyler wrote one heck of a story. I was instantly intrigued by the two main characters, Lacey and Alex, and the attraction that is building between them.

From the beginning of the book you automatically like the two characters and are awaiting the spontaneous combustion of the two and Georgie doesn’t disappoint with her writing.

I would have liked to see more character development of the two antagonists, however, Alex, in his storytelling, gives us what we need to know.

I enjoyed the ending. It was nice to see Lacey come into her own at the end of the book. The two make a great pair and I thoroughly relished reading this book.

My Review:
First off, I want to let you guys know that I struggled to get through this book. It was a whirlwind….the poor grammar, the quick plot, and the underdeveloped characters, I wanted to just put down the book and walk away. But I didn’t for you guys. I don’t want you guys to have to experience that I did. So I finished it and now will give you my review.

“Her Stepbrothers’ Demands” starts off with Jasmine Alexander running away from an unknown threat (to the reader). It’s quickly explained that she lives with her mother, Katherine, and her step-father, Cole Madox. Apparently, Cole has done something to piss her off. It has something to do with assisting her mother into breaking a pact that they made when she was younger.

Her two stepbrothers are now introduced, Logan and R.D., as they escort her off an airplane. Did I tell you she was on an airplane? Well, she is. Apparently, TSA doesn’t exist in this novel because they were able to make it to the plane without a ticket, grab her, and escort her back home.

From there, the book just speeds by with the amount of plot lines that are being thrown at you.

Her step-family are werewolves (hence her being mad at her mother because she already knew), her daddy is crazy, she’s being stalked by a vampire, she’s the soul mate of her two step-brothers, and on top of all of this, she’s thirty and talks and acts like she’s nineteen.

Instead of taking time to thoroughly develop the characters and have the reader get to know them, within ten minutes of reading, there’s enough people in the game to spin your mind for a loop. Nothing truly gets resolved or explained and at the end of the book you’re just glad the ride is over.
If the concepts and characters were truly developed this could have been an awesome trilogy, instead the reader is left with a short story unworthy of reading.

I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone and that’s unfortunate.

The cover is hot though. I’ll give the publisher’s that.

Until next time,

But First Let Me Introduce Myself…

The face behind the Kindle…

….my name is ‘Nelle. I have been an avid reader for as long as I can remember. Growing up my mother didn’t punish me by taking away my television time, she punished me by taking away my book time. By doing so, she took away my journeys to far away lands, different events, and becoming different people at a turn of a page.  Her punishments were brutal, man.
